  • 5 More Ways to Go Green for Earth Day – There are many ways to take part in the environmental movement on the social web. With Earth Day rapidly approaching this Thursday, we decided to revisit our post from a few weeks ago on ways to go green with social media.
  • Facebook Reveals FriendFeed’s Future [VIDEO] – Last August, when Facebook bought Twitter competitor FriendFeed, many of its core users were shocked and concerned, even speculating as to whether the social networking giant would shutter the startup and absorb its tech as part of a new feature or product.
  • Facebook Open Graph: What it Means for Privacy – At Facebook’s F8 Developer Conference today, the company fleshed out its plans to become the social center of the web. With the new Open Graph API and protocol and the ability to integrate websites and web apps within your existing social network, the platform will become more robust than ever before.

  • If You Link Your Facebook Profile Data to Pages, then You Make that Information Public by Default – Facebook’s new user profile Pages transition tool includes an obvious and yet not obvious way that users might make personal information more publicly available. (via @nealwiser)
  • Facebook’s Plan To Automatically Share Your Data With Sites You Never Signed Up For – In anticipation of a slew of new features that will be launching at f8, today Facebook announced that it was once again making changes to its privacy policy (you can see our post outlining these changes here). One of the biggest changes that Facebook is making involves applications and third-party websites. We’ve been hearing whispers from multiple sources about these changes, and the announcement all but confirms what Facebook is planning to do. In short, it sounds like Facebook is going to be automatically opting users into a reduced form of Facebook Connect on certain third party sites — a bold change that may well unnerve users, at least at first.
  • Facebook To Release A “Like” Button For the Whole Darn Internet – There will be lots of news leaking about Facebook’s product announcements at their upcoming F8 Developer Conference in April. That’s because they’re already starting to test out a lot of the new stuff with third party developers, and once two people know a secret, it isn’t really a secret any more.
  • Facebook To Launch Meebo Bar Clone On Its Quest To Take Over The Web – In the last few days, we’ve uncovered some major new features that Facebook is going to announce at its f8 developer conference, including its plan to offer a Like button for the entire Internet and a creepy auto-Connect feature that will share your data with sites you never signed up for. Now we’ve heard from multiple sources about a third major product the company plans to unveil: a persistent Facebook toolbar that third-party sites can integrate that sounds a whole lot like the Meebo Bar.
  • The f8 Preview: How Facebook Plans to Take Over the Web – Facebook’s third f8 developer conference kicks off tomorrow in San Francisco and online, with the social networking company likely to announce what is essentially a game plan to not only socialize the web, but to marginalize the pre-social web. But while such a plan indicates a tussle with fellow upstart Twitter, the real battle is Facebook vs. Google.
  • Everything Facebook Will Announce At f8: The Definitive Guide – Want to know what Facebook will be announcing at f8 tomorrow? We’ve got the definitive guide straight from Facebook. In addition to announcing a number of new tools during a keynote at f8 tomorrow, Facebook will be hosting a “New Tools” track for developers focused on four key topics: “Open Graph and Social Plugins”, “Facebook Credits”, the “Graph API”, and “Better Analytics Through Insights”. What do all these things mean? Here’s the rundown.

  • Facebook Clarifies Minimum Spending Requirements for Page Promotions – Facebook requires that anyone wanting to administer a promotion or sweepstakes on their Facebook Page first get written approval. But part of the approval process has been surprising people since it was updated last November. In order to be approved, you need an account representative at Facebook. And to get an account representative in the first place, you need to spend around $10,000 on Facebook advertising.
  • WARNING: “Like” Facebook Application Is Not Real – This morning we’ve been receiving numerous notifications about a misleading application that is spreading around that attempts to replicate Facebook’s like functionality. Users first find out about the application, called “Like”, as they receive a notification which says “Your Friend Likes your photo”. The user then clicks the link and installs the application which promptly sends notifications to all of that users’ friends.
  • Twitter Nears Facebook’s Daily Status Update Volume – This afternoon Twitter announced that the company now receives over 50 million status updates per day. Compare that with Facebook who states they currently receive over 60 million updates per day. Despite Twitter being a fraction of the size of Facebook, the company now owns a massive percentage of the total status updates posted each day on the web. The latest statistics should revive discussion over the ongoing Facebook versus Twitter war.

  • Could the Toyota Recall Crisis be Helping the Brand? – There’s no question that Toyota is in deep trouble with its current recall crisis. But could these issues actually be helping its brand? Shockingly, an analysis of Toyota shows that its Social Influence Marketing (SIM) Score saw an uptick in January. Who’d have thought that a crisis of such significant magnitude could actually help a brand’s perception? This seems to be true, at least in the short term, even though sales may be dropping. Let me explain how.
  • The Dalai Lama Officially Joins Twitter – More and more celebrity holdouts are joining the Twitter bandwagon. First Bll Gates started tweeting, then yesterday rapper Lil Wayne joined the service. Today, another famous figure has his own Twitter presence: The Dalai Lama.
  • Betty White Might Appear on SNL Thanks to Facebook – Betty White might actually make an appearance on Saturday Night Live — a victory for more than 400,000 Facebook users who became fans of a page lobbying Lorne Michaels to offer the comedienne the chance to host an episode.

  • Justin.tv To Launch Pay-Per-View Channels – The live video streaming site Justin.tv is set to launch a pay-per-view service next month, allowing content providers to charge fees to those tuning in online.
  • NBA Player Fined $7,500 for a Tweet – Last weekend Jennings tweeted 15 minutes after the Bucks game against the Trailblazers ended. That’s a big no-no in the NBA, as the league’s social media policy spells out that players aren’t allowed to tweet post-game until the team has finished talking to the media. The cost for Jennings’ Twitter hiccup? A hefty $7,500.
  • Bing! Ballmer Says You’re Fired [VIDEO] – Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is known for his antics, but — if a video recently uploaded to YouTube is to be believed — this incident takes the cake. Apparently, Ballmer fired a Microsoft employee for not being enthusiastic enough about Bing.
  • Don’t Like Your Facebook Friends? Blow Them Up with the Star Wars Death Star – If you’re Adidas and you’ve got a Star Wars-inspired collection rolling out in January, what better way to promote it than by using social media? Adidas, however, has taken its online marketing initiative one step further integrating Facebook and Google Maps to create the Star Wars Death Star Superlaser.
  • HOW TO: Use Facebook Privacy Controls on Your Fan Page – Lately it seems like Facebook changes its privacy options more often than most people change their statuses. Late last week, Facebook rolled out yet another set of new privacy settings, replacing regional networks with concentric circles of connections. Before, Facebook’s default privacy settings were largely location-based — people who lived near you, or went to the same college as you, were able to see more information about you. Now, access is all about who you know and who knows them.
