  • Facebook and Twitter Making a Major Impact on Purchase Decisions [STATS]
  • Airline, Hospitality Industry Catching Up to App Demand – MarketingVOX – Independent apps that focus on travel needs – from tip calculators to pocket dictionaries – have been the mainstay of business travelers for several years. Now airlines and hotels have caught up to the demand – and expectations – of business travelers with their own smartphone applications since last year's launch by Southwest Airlines of an iPhone app – the first U.S. airline to do so, according to USA Today.
  • Social Fans More Likely to Buy – eMarketer – Social media marketers looking for an indication that their efforts are helping the bottom line will be encouraged by findings from Chadwick Martin Bailey and iModerate that social friends and followers feel more inclined to purchase from the brands they are fans of.
  • 3 Crisis Survival Lessons for the Social Media Age – If there was any doubt before last year as to social media’s ability to exacerbate reputation crises, 2009 settled the debate. In just that one year, Domino’s, United Airlines, and Tiger Woods were but a few of the headlining examples that were variously infected by the viral bug. These global brands made their problems even worse with sloppy responses to online news reports, blog posts, Facebook (Facebook) updates, YouTube (YouTube) videos, and Twitter (Twitter) entries.
  • Chatroulette + Improv Piano Player = Love! [VIDEO] – Chatroulette has had its share of stormtroopers and Jon Stewart parodies, but now there’s a new star on the block: the Chatroulette improv piano player.
  • Twitter Blog: @anywhere – When we designed Twitter, we took a different approach—we didn’t require a relationship model like that of a social network. Keeping things open meant you could browse our site to read tweets from friends, celebrities, companies, media outlets, fictional characters, and more. You could follow any account and be followed by any account. As a result, companies started interacting with customers, celebrities connected with fans, governments became more transparent, and people started discovering and sharing information in a new, participatory manner.

However, in order to be a successful player in the social media field, you must be seen as a thought-leader with a personality. This is not an easy task to accomplish, since so many companies are now invading social sites every day. I believe that creating an impressionable personality through your social media communications is a huge key to good relationship building.

  • Why Brands are Becoming Media
  • Windows 8 Will Blow Your Mind. Hopefully Not Like Vista – The folks at Microsoft Kitchen dug up some cool quotes from Microsoft employees about the upcoming Windows OS, currently codenamed Windows 8. Though it does bring up painful memories of what was promised about Vista (the marketing campaign, you may remember, was called “the wow starts now”), Microsoft did partially redeem itself with Windows 7, so we can put some (if not all) trust in what’s said about the next version.
  • Google Deletes Music Blogs, Prompts a Twitter Upheaval – Google has deleted six of the most popular Blogger-based music blogs on the web (including their entire archives) in an effort to combat online music piracy. The move comes in response to Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) take-down notices.
  • Chrome for Mac Officially Gets Extensions and Bookmark Sync – Google has just officially rolled out extensions as part of the latest beta release of Chrome for Mac. The new release of Chrome for Mac also includes bookmark sync (across multiple computers), bookmark and cookie managers and a new Task Manager.
  • Changes/Feature Requests For Google Buzz – Kevin Rose – Google announced Buzz today, a photo/videos/link/status sharing service. The big news here isn’t really the functionality of Buzz, but that Google is boldly integrating this directly into Gmail – essentially taking the product from zero to millions of users in a matter of hours. If Buzz is a success it will mean real competition for Twitter and useful real-time public data for Google.

Review: 42 Rules of Social Media Success for Small Business

There may not be a hotter buzz term right now floating around marketing meetings then the term “Social Media”. From Comcast to Hewlett Packard, many companies are utilizing social media as part of their marketing and customer service plans.

For the small business owner, keeping up with the latest trends in marketing can be daunting. They may have heard of Facebook but isn’t that just for reconnecting with friends from high school? And Twitter – isn’t that just telling people what you ate for lunch earlier?

In 42 Rules of Social Media Success for Small Business, Jennifer L. Jacobsen dives into the world of social media and explains how the power of social media can help you connect and communicate effectively with your customers. She shows how outlets such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook can help drive traffic to your site and also be a great place to monitor what people are saying about your brand.

The part of this book that I found to be most valuable was the use of real life examples. The author mentions specific examples of how companies have used social media successfully. These examples can be easily translated into success for a small business model.

As the book goes on, Jennifer gets into more advanced techniques and drops some great tips for using social media. Her chapters on “Spoon Feeding the Press” and “Publicize your Companies Events” are great way of getting some free press for your company. Not to mention the more people know about the events your company is doing the better the chance to be mentioned in a blog and get a link back to your website!

Rules of Social Media Success for Small Business provides great insight into how a small business owner can utilize the power of social media. Whether you are looking to make people aware of your business, drive traffic to your website or just monitor your brand, Jennifer uses this book to show you how social media can help you achieve your goals.
