What Is a Social Newspaper?

How we consume news is changing at a very rapid rate. Recent developments have gotten us closer and closer to a personalized newspaper. These services take information from your social network and organize it into a newspaper format. Each is a little different, all are free.

Paper.liPaper.li

Paper.li creates a custom newspaper from your twitter feed. It takes the news, images, and videos from your Twitter Feed and organizes it a newspaper layout. For an example of what one looks like, you can check out mine at http://paper.li/jamesbasbas . It is simple to setup, and very customizable. For instance you can simply use your twitter feed. However, you can also create a paper based on someone else’s feed a hashtag, or a list. It updates twice per day, so it is somewhat static. As you can see from my link, you can share your paper or others can subscribe to your paper. I don’t quite see the value to this feature, as it seems like the point is to make this personal. I don’t see why anyone would want to read my paper, perhaps maybe a stalker.

Paper.li jumping off of Twitter makes a lot of sense because there are so many reporters on Twitter. You can essentially take your favorite reporter from dozens of different newspapers, magazines, and networks to create your own paper. Many news outlets have been reluctant to allow their reporters to tweet because they are worried about hurting the paper. However, Paper.li is just one more reason that if you are not tweeting, you may find yourself completely cut out of this social newspaper.

Pros: Twitter is news rich; Great options including twitter feed, hashtag, or list; Very easy to use.

Cons: Only updates twice per day; does not integrate Facebook.

PostPostPostPost

PostPost connects to Facebook and grabs all of your friend’s links, photos, and videos. It is updated in real time and available on the web. They also have a Chrome store application. The layout is customizable, including only viewing links, photos, videos, or a dynamic mix. This site is built completely on HTML5, no flash so it is very fast and updates quickly. You can share and comments right from this page, but not like. For a video introduction from the inventor, please click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3oI9fsCEIg.

Pros: Very Fast; Ability to share and comment in-line; Updates in real-time.

Cons: Not as customizable; No Twitter integration.

FlipboardFlipbook

Flipboard is only available for iPad. It takes your Facebook and Twitter feeds and lays them out in a magazine format. It is very slick looking on the iPad and flips through just as a magazine would. You can easily share stories by e-mail or retweet them right from this app. For an in-depth video describing Flipboard, please click http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7umqKbQ3PA.

Pros: Utilizes both Facebook and Twitter feeds. Sharp looking.

Cons: Only usable if you have an iPad.

Conclusion

PostPost is a very interesting way to view your Facebook content. However, news is not Facebook’s wheelhouse. Facebook is more social, sharing personal photos, personal update, and comments. For news, Twitter, is where that lives. Reporters and commentators are all over Twitter, and have thousands and even millions of followers. Therefore, any creation of a newspaper needs to include Twitter. If you look at your own online profile, I am sure you follow reporters on Twitter, but I doubt you are friends with them on Facebook. Paper.li allows you to drill into your twitter feed, or utilize a list to create a rich social newspaper. It is a great way to get a snapshot of what is going on as viewed through your lens.

Flipboard is beautiful and reads like a magazine. If you have an iPad it is a must have. For the rest of us, Paper.li is the way to go.

How do you consume the news? Are you utilizing a social newspaper? If so, which one? We would love to hear from you.

Apple Launches Ping: Attempts To Infiltrate Social Media

Yesterday Steve Jobs of Apple announced the launch of Ping – a social network that revolves around the sharing of music. Users will be able to share songs and playlists and be able to purchase songs directly from a link in a status update. Thus driving large amounts of revenue through the social network.

During the press conference Apple boasted Ping being readily available to 160 million users and available in 23 countries. At first glance it looks as if Apple has taken a hold of a great opportunity but when you dig deeper that might not be the case.

Another tech-giant also recently took a stab at the social media industry and has not had great success. Google Buzz was launched back in February had millions of users lined up. But as Google converted every one of those Gmail users to ‘Google Buzzers’ they soon saw flaws in their product. With Gmail users already armed with Twitter and Facebook to serve their social media needs many tried Buzz and eventually turned away.

With Ping, Apple will be hoping their results are different. Last.fm already provides the mass public with the ability to track what you listen to or share what the new favorite band is. But at the same time, many of those Last.fm users have a iPhone or have iTunes on their PC or Mac. If Google Buzz shows us anything, those iTunes users will at least ‘try out’ the new Ping product. The watershed event for Apple will be when they make their decisions to go back to Last.fm or Myspace or if they stick with Ping.

  • HOW TO: Organize A Successful Meetup – Gathering friends, followers and “likers” online can only take you so far in the world of networking. Organizing a Meetup is a great way to move your virtual network to a tangible territory.
  • A New Suffix for X-Rated Web Sites – NYTimes.com – What if the Web held a sex party and no one showed up?
  • Facebook Adds White House Economic Advisor To D.C. Office – Facebook has been ramping up their D.C. office pretty consistently over the past couple years and today they announced that they’ve hired Marne Levine as their new Vice President of global public policy. Levine previously served as the White House economic advisor. I guess she figured that with the economy going so well, it was time to make the jump! (Sarcasm) According to the Washington Post, Levine “will oversee the company’s interaction with governments and non-governmental organizations around the globe”.
  • Facebook’s “War Declaration” Was Actually The Building Of A Boat – I thought it would be useful to post one more update regarding Facebook’s supposed “War Declaration” against Google with their Open Graph search functionality. In multiple instances Facebook has downplayed the appearance of search results, as they should. For Facebook to tell Google that they are planning to take on the search giant at their own game when the army hasn’t been assembled yet is not smart. To be fair, Facebook wasn’t the one declaring war, that was only our interpretation.
  • Hitler. iPhone 4 Antenna. You Know The Drill – It seems like everyone is up in arms about the iPhone 4 antenna issue. You know, the one Apple CEO Steve Jobs suggested you fix by avoiding “holding it that way.” That “way” being the way just about everyone holds their phone. As such, it should be no surprise that Hitler is upset about this issue as well.

  • AdMob CEO: Apple’s New Mobile Advertising Rules Will Hurt Developers – Yesterday, All Things Digital’s Peter Kafka pointed out the possibility that Apple could be limiting Google-acquired mobile ad network AdMob from selling ads on the iPhone and iPad platform. The language was a little vague in Apple’s new developer licensing agreement, but indicates that only “independent” ad-serving companies will be able to serve ads. AdMob could be prevented from showing ads because it is not independent as a part of Google, which “develops and distributes mobile devices and operating systems.” AdMob founder and CEO Omar Hamoui told us hours before Apple’s new terms of the agreement came out that nothing good would come of disallowing AdMob to serve ads. But today the company has officially responded to the potential issue.
  • Google Completes Caffeine Update After Nearly a Year | WebProNews – Google announced today that it has completed its new web indexing system called Caffeine. The company claims it provides 50% fresher results for web searches than the previous index and is the largest collection of web content it's offered.
  • New Twitter Links to Play Significant Role in Resonance Algorithm | WebProNews – Twitter has introduced a new, secure link-shortening service called t.co. All links shared on Twitter.com or third-party apps will be wrapped with a t.co URL.
  • Majority Of Facebook Users Are Fans Of At Least One Company | WebProNews – More than half (58%) of U.S. online consumers begin their day interacting with companies via email, compared to 20 percent who start their day on search engines and 11 percent on Facebook, according to a new study by Exact Target.
  • Bing Offers New Take On Social Search | WebProNews – This afternoon, Bing will take a big step forward in terms of social search. Yusuf Mehdi, Senior Vice President of the Online Audience Business at Microsoft, announced at SMX Advanced that a Bing site will start to integrate information from Facebook.
  • How Political Campaigns Are Using Social Media for Real Results – Just as social media has opened a dialogue between businesses and consumers, its value is apparent to those in political office, whose work and very professional survival hinges on the needs and perceptions of their constituents.
  • Bing Adds Facebook Updates and Links to Search Results – Facebook search will go live later today at bing.com/social and will include the full Facebook firehose complete with non-Pages content.
  • How to Display Twitter Updates on Websites – Displaying your Twitter feed on your website is a wonderful way to show visitors real-time news and events. An attractive Twitter widget can encourage your website’s audience to follow you on Twitter, serving as an additional method for expanding your network. Furthermore, when designed right, a Twitter feed can improve the aesthetics of a website’s layout.
  • Facebook Expands Its Reach with Address Book Import – Facebook now allows users to bulk import their e-mail address books so that they can invite non-Facebook friends to join in Facebook games and apps, including people who may not even have a Facebook account.
  • HOW TO: Follow the 2010 FIFA World Cup on Twitter – The 2010 World Cup is going to be a very interesting one as far as social media goes — it’s the first to be played out in the Twitter era and the first to fully embrace the social media universe.
